Sometimes a new project is also a nice excuse to expand the instrument closet. With The Roses, composer Theodore Shapiro wanted to explore using the Steel Drums for more than just the usual jaunty vacation instrument. Their inherent instability was a beautiful untraditional choice, and I was able to add a small steel pan as well as a lovely hand pan to my collection.
