Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas – The Pearl
An iconic centerpiece of the world’s largest cruise ship is The Pearl: truly a stops-you-in-your-tracks piece of delightful optic opulence designed and built by my friends at the creative agency Brilliant Work. I’m thrilled to be tapped as the sound designer for this installation that runs 24/7 in the main thoroughfare of Royal Caribbean’s newest ship, Legend of the Seas.
Few times have I seen technology and art combine with such colorful exuberance. But it all makes sense if you meet Creative Director Scott Nuñez-Peterman. We all talk about the creative vision for a project, but I think the hypnotic technicolor rainbow of the Pearl might somehow be just a direct feed from Scott’s visual cortex.
The sound design textures and gestures subtly enhance the energy of the Promenade neighborhood space around us, and then lift the kinetics of big visual moments inside the Pearl. It crashes waves, submerges us in underwater depths, sparkles with futurism, dances with bloops, and gently soothes us back to our cabins at night. You might even catch the occasional whale song.
